I REALLY hate American coverage right now. They show every Grand Prix event EXCEPT Cup of China! WHY? Who knows! I wanted to see Xue Shen & Hongbo Zhao again! At least I can see them online but it's just not the same. *growls* I would've thought with NBC's mysterious love affair with Tanith Belbin & Evan Lysacek we would have gotten to see it, but no! We were GYPPED! What's worse is what they showed in the place was just infomercials and Cops. Please tell me that gets less ratings than skating...

Shen and Zhao hit new highs in the short at Skate America

The pairs’ competition at Skate America, the fifth event of the Grand Prix series this season, started spectacularly with birthday girl Xue Shen and her partner Hongbo Zhao celebrating with another season-leading short program score. With them way ahead of the rest of the field, the battle is between the next four pairs for the silver and bronze medals. Only five points separate second through fifth heading into tomorrow’s free skate.

Only two weeks after their last competition at Cup of China, Shen and Zhao were already showing improvements in some of the elements that were a bit shaky. Their throw triple loop and triple twist were the class of the field, and their press lift was strong and steady. Their score of 74.36 blew the rest of the field away and is the best short program score of any pair this season. It also ties the best ever short program score in the history of the International Judging System (IJS) that was set by Dan Zhang and Hao Zhang at the 2008 Worlds.

Incidentally, Zhang and Zhang are also competing at Skate America, but their disappointing short was not anywhere as strong as that of their countrymen. Like she did at Cup of China two weeks ago, Dan Zhang had trouble with her solo triple salchow, popping it into a double. But unlike at Cup of China, she also had issues with her solo spin, which lowered their base value even further. They are in fifth place as a result of those mistakes, a huge surprise for the World silver medalists.

Ukrainian champions Tatiana Volosozhar and Stanislav Morozov once again showed off their spectacular elements, with their own mistake being a minor error in Morozov’s triple toe loop. They sit in the silver medal spot going into the free skate.

Canadian silver medalists Meagan Duhamel and Craig Buntin seem to also be making improvements of their own, with a clean short program that featured the most difficult throw in the competition, the throw triple lutz. Their only technical weakness in the program was their double twist, while many of the other pairs perform a triple twist. But their confidence seemed much higher than it was in their last competition, Cup of China, and their 59.64 put them in third.

Two-time U.S. champions Keauna McLaughlin and Rockne Brubaker struggled again with their side-by-side triple salchows. But their otherwise strong elements, including a huge throw triple loop and a well-executed triple twist, were enough to keep them in the medal hunt in fourth place, just over one point behind the Canadians.

U.S. pewter medalists Amanda Evora and Mark Ladwig had a partial collision on the landing of their side-by-side triple salchows, which kept them down in sixth place. 2007 U.S. champions Brooke Castile and Benjamin Okolski had the unenviable task of following Shen and Zhao in the short program. Their mistakes were costly, and with a score of 49.52, they are currently in seventh place.

Shen, Zhao break new ground with best-ever short

If you're Xue Shen you go out and perform your best short program ever, and set a new world record in the process.

Shen and her partner and husband, Hongbo Zhao, took another step to elusive Olympic gold tonight, setting the pace with a 74.36-point performance that outstripped the field by 12.66 points.

"I'm young," joked Zhao, 36, in the mixed zone.

"We're so happy, but it is not enough. It is just a short program. We were a little tired, because of the time change."

If this is tired, the rest of the world's top pairs are in trouble.

The skaters, who married in 2007 and have skated together for 17 years, showed a peerless combination of athleticism and grace in their short to Queen's "Who Wants to Live Forever." They hit their three big elements -- side-by-side triple toes, triple twist and throw triple loop -- right off the top, then showed off improved spins and an elegant lift.

Only their final move, an awkward back outside death spiral that gained just Level 2, was less than stellar.

"We started training [for competition] again in May, and it was very hard," Zhao said. "Everything hurts. My knees, back, shoulder. Only the competitions feel good."

Earlier this season, the veteran duo won Cup of China after a two-year hiatus from competition. Now, barring a catastrophe in the free skate, they're well on their way to the Grand Prix Final with two wins under their belts.

Asked why they decided to return after three world titles and two Olympic bronzes, neither hesitated.

"The Olympics," Zhao said. "That's our dream."

To compete again, or to win gold?

"We're back for gold," Shen said.

Ukrainians Tatiana Volosozhar and Stanislav Morozov hit a soaring triple twist and throw triple loop, but Morozov faltered on a triple toe. They placed a distant second with 61.70 points.

"I did a mistake again," Morozov said. "We changed the jumps [from triple Salchows at Cup of China] but it didn't help today."

Canadian champions Meagan Duhamel and Craig Buntin skated a solid short to the Eagles' "Hotel California," earning 59.64 points for their clean performance.

"We lost a few levels because of stupid little things, but overall it was much, much better than Cup of China," Duhamel said.

The Ukrainians placed third at Cup of China; the Canadians were fourth.

Two-time U.S. champions Keauna McLaughlin and Rockne Brubaker both made costly errors on their side-by-side triple Salchows, gaining just 0.10 for the element.

The rest of their program, choreographed by Sarah Kawahara to "Unchained Melody," was solid, including improved side-by-side camel combination spins that earned Level 4.

"Everything was good but the jump," McLaughlin said.

"The jump was kind of a downer. I think we improved on a lot of stuff after Cup of Russia. Our spins were good and I think our overall presentation was better."

"I would have liked to have been a little higher on the program component scores; I think we were better here," added Brubaker. "But sometimes it's different from [judging] panel to panel."

World silver medalists Dan Zhang and Hao Zhang had a disappointing outing. Dan Zhang doubled an intended triple Salchow, and the team lacked unison on their side-by-side spins. They sit fifth with 56.84 points.

Amanda Evora and Mark Ladwig, fourth at the 2010 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, lost ground when Evora had her triple Salchow downgraded by the technical panel. They earned 50.14 points for sixth place.

2007 U.S. champions Brooke Castile and Ben Okolski also missed their side-by-side triple Salchows and sit seventh with 49.52 points.

"We felt good, it was a poor skate," Castile said. "Sometimes you can do everything you're supposed to do and it still doesn't work."

Savchenko and Szolkowy sets new world record at Skate Canada

Mirroring Joannie Rochette’s performances that got back on track with her win in the ladies’ event, World champions Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy had a little redemption of their own, skating a new free skate to win the gold at Skate Canada. They won by 21 points in a competitive field that featured a number of solid free skates.

Savchenko and Szolkowy stepped it up after their disastrous free skate in Paris to set a new season-leading free skate score en route to a win and a spot in the Grand Prix Final. After skating poorly at Trophee Eric Bompard in the free skate, they decided to start from scratch and come up with a new free skate for a fresh start. The new program seemed to do wonders for them, as they skated their first strong free skate of the season. Their only error was in their side-by-side double axels, which both of them singled. Nevertheless, their total score of 206.71 set a new world record, just edging Xue Shen and Hongbo Zhao’s record set five years ago.

Russian silver medalists Maria Mukhortova and Maxim Trankov continued their string of consistent and solid performances this season with a clean free skate. Their only trouble came with a costume malfunction, when the strap on Trankov’s pants broke. The malfunction gave them a mandatory two-point deduction for an interruption in the program, but they continued and finished strongly to capture the silver and also qualify for the Final.

Canadian champions Jessica Dube and Bryce Davison had troubles in the side-by-side jumps, much like they had in their short program. Those mistakes, combined with an invalidated pairs spin at the end of the program, prevented them from getting enough points to win the tiebreak between them and Dan Zhang and Hao Zhang for the final spot in the Grand Prix Final.

American silver medalists Caydee Denney and Jeremy Barrett were strong in the free skate to finish in fifth. The second American pair, Caitlin Yankowskas and John Coughlin, finished in seventh place.

PAIRS (final standings)
1. Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy GER – 206.71
2. Maria Mukhortova and Maxim Trankov RUS – 185.71
3. Jessica Dube and Bryce Davison CAN – 166.93
4. Anabelle Langlois and Cody Hay CAN – 159.95
5. Caydee Denney and Jeremy Barrett USA – 157.09
6. Kirsten Moore-Towers and Dylan Moscovitch CAN – 146.91
7. Caitlin Yankowskas and John Coughlin USA – 143.61
8. Ksenia Ozerova and Alexander Enbert RUS – 113.36

Savchenko suffering from glandular fever

Image

BERLIN - Germany's Aliona Savchenko, a hot favourite for the Olympic paris title in Vancouver next month with skating partner Robin Szolkowy, is suffering from glandular fever.

Some reports say the 25 year old is suffering from mononucleosis, which generally has a three to four week recovery period.

Savchenko has cut down on her training and might not compete in the European championships in Estonia from January 18-24, sources said.

Savchenko and Szolkowy, who have been skating together since 2003, are the reigning two-time world pairs champions and have won the European crown for the last three years.
