A disappointing fourth-place finish last season at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships provided motivation for Jeremy Abbott to redeem himself. And there was no question that his redemption was complete today, as he put together his two best programs since he won his last U.S. title two years ago, completely outclassing the rest of the competition to take his third gold in four years.
Coming into this week, Abbott was considered once again to be the heavy favorite for the title. And after a superb short program put him in first by a large margin, he backed it up with his strongest free skate of the season. Opening with the only clean quad of the 20 men in the competition, he hit two triple axels and three more clean triples to run away with the title. Advertisement
But it was not a flawless performance for Abbott, as he was deducted for underrotating his triple loop and doubled an intended triple salchow. Still, no other skater came close, particularly in the strength of the free skate choreographically, and he won the event with a final total of 273.58.
Abbott’s training mate, Adam Rippon, took his first ever medal at U.S. Nationals with the silver, hitting seven triples to finish with a 240.87. Though he has finished sixth at the World Championships, his previous highest placement at Nationals was fifth in each of the past two seasons.
Fourth after the short program, defending bronze medalist Ross Miner took his second bronze in as many years, moving up with a seven-triple free skate that earned him a total score of 230.32. He finished over five points ahead of Armin Mahbanoozadeh, who dropped from third to fourth. Skating earlier in the competition, Douglas Razzano recorded his best ever finish by taking fifth after finishing fourth in the free skate.
