Russian figure skating star Evgeni Plushenko is to perform his new free program to Italian composer Nino Rota’s music from a 1968 film version of Romeo and Juliet , his coach Alexei Mishin told R-Sport on Friday.
The seven-time European champion, 29, is in Italy working with Japanese choreographer and former skater Kenji Miyamoto on the program, Mishin said.
“I suggested to Zhenya [Plushenko] to work with Japanese choreographer Kenji Miyamoto, he’s making him a free program to the music of Romeo and Juliet,” Mishin said.
“It’s working out very well. I’m very satisfied with Zhenya’s mood and working condition.”
Plushenko, who recently performed at exhibitions in China and Japan (Japan? :du_ma_et: ) , is showing no ill-effects from knee surgery that he underwent in Germany earlier this year, Mishin said.
“He’s completely healthy, nothing’s troubling him.”
Italian choreographer Pasquale Camerlengo joined Plushenko’s team in April and is working with him to refine various elements in his existing programs .
Plushenko, who won gold in Turin in 2006, is on his second comeback to the sport and targets gold at his home Olympics in Sochi in 2014.

(06/22/2012) - Evgeni Plushenko is turning to a familiar composer for next season's free skate, choosing to skate to Nino Rota's oft-used score from the 1968 film Romeo and Juliet , the Russian news agency R-Sport reported Friday.
The coach of the three-time world champion, Alexei Mishin, said his skater is in Pinzolo, Italy, collaborating with Japanese choreographer Kenji Miyamoto on his new free skate. Miyamoto is a former ice dancer who has previously worked with mostly Japanese skaters, including world champions Daisuke Takahashi and Miki Ando.

"It's working out very well," Mishin told R-Sport. "I'm very satisfied with Zhenya's mood and working condition." ("Zhenya" is an affectionate form of "Evgeni" in Russian.)

The 29-year-old Plushenko previously used Rota's score from The Godfather for his free skate in 2004-05 and 2005-06, the season in which he won the Olympic gold medal in Torino, Italy.

Mishin also said the knee surgery Plushenko underwent in February was a total success.

"He's completely healthy," Mishin said. "Nothing's troubling him."

After placing second at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games to Evan Lysacek, Plushenko took the following season off. He returned in 2011-12, winning his ninth national title and his seventh European championship.

In April, Pasquale Camerlengo spent four days with Plushenko and Mishin at their training base in St. Petersburg to put together a short program and fine-tune other aspects of his skating.

The program looks promising, but obviously I only saw them working on the very first day on it. I think Kenji Miyamoto is a very talented choreographer and Evgeni Plushenko and Alexei Mishin are ready to try something new and different which is good to see.

But Evgeni still might also turn to yet another program. He did so in the past. He likes to have several options to choose from.

- Kenji Miyamoto is 33 now.
- Last season he choreographed over fifty programs mainly for Japanese skaters.
- In general he makes a program for three days.
- Even after choreographing Daisuke Takahashi's short program "Eye" for the season 2009-10, the number of requests from skaters didn't increase much. But media was getting to pay more attention to him.
- He started skating at 10 years old. He was playing also football and baseball. But he was good at skating. Switching to Ice Dance in 1995 was because of his coach Yutaka Higuchi's suggestion. He was tall among Japanese skaters. So the coach thought Miyamoto should do ice dancing.
- He won the 1995 Japanese Junior Nationals as an ice dancer.
- Retirement was in 2006.
- He lived in USA and France when he was a high school student. There were many choreographers around him. So he was dreaming necessarily someday he will become a choreographer too.

- Miyamoto choreographs different way for different types of skaters. He watches before choreographing each skater's appearance, arms or legs length, muscle. With those factors, he decides what fits to each one. Pretty curvy program, or rock-solid program, or..
- He skates together with a client and choreographs. He makes program with skater.

- "I respect my client's decision on the music selection. If my client said 'I'd love to skate to this song' I respect it. If his coach said 'I'd love my skater to do like that' I respect it. Only when it's not suitable for my client, I suggest something another."
- He starts choreographing not on the floor but the ice. Because he never prepare anything before choreography. First, he goes on the ice with skater, and makes part from part, at the end the whole program is done.
- To come up with an idea is the most difficult to him.

The summer training camps in Oberstdorf, Germany and Pinzolo, Italy, were busy as usual.

Alexei Mishin’s summer camp in Pinzolo in Northern Italy has become a tradition already. Most of his skaters from St. Petersburg – from the little ones up to Evgeni Plushenko, Artur Gachinski and Lisa Tuktamysheva - had travelled to Italy to take part in the camp. Plushenko started working with new choreographer Kenji Miyamoto, a former Japanese ice dancer, on June 21 on a new long program to “Romeo and Juliet” by Nino Rota, using a different arrangement, but not the one Edvin Marton created for Tatiana Totmianina/Maxim Marinin.

Show is over. If I remember correctly, Zhenya did at today's first show: 3T+3T, 2A (attempted 3A), 3A. Second show: 3T+3T, 3A, 3Lz. Today's second performance was the best among eight shows :co_ol:

Each and every time I watch him, I am always surprised at how much he has attractive aura. He is really special, unique beyond comparison. :plush33:
To be honest, at first I wanted to see new program. But, Storm was just amazing :son-ce: Audience was squealing at his every single move. He had full command of the show!
Surprisingly (?), Zhenya was the most popular even if there were Japanese stars. I don't create hype. Probably Takahashi's fans couldn't get tickets because he was listed very last. :plush36: I saw many many Russian flags, especially today. Arena was like Russian territory plush48 :-)

By the way, today I saw Kenji Miyamoto was talking something to Zhenya outside the arena. I don't know what they were talking about. Just, they both were pretty good looking :-)

Plushy skated only on last show both programs?
He skated just one program for each show. Only 16th was Storm. From 13-15 - Roxanne.
I have to say it was incredible, spectacular!!! :ya_hoo_oo: Can you believe that I was saying at first "Oh... Storm? :plush35: ". :-) Now I want to hit myself of that time ;;-)))


He was skating the second from the last, before Shizuka Arakawa. Prince team treated him royally :son-ce:
Though, after finale, they often pushed and shut Zhenya out of entrance curtain :-) He was closed out and tried to go back inside. But the team pulled the curtain together to resist. Yesterday or 2 days ago, as well. Zhenya gracefully saluted the audience like a ballerina. And then, they finally allowed him to return ;;-))) (if i remember correctly..)

The last show, Zhenya was closed out again but along with Yuzuru Hanyu. Yuzuru looked really happy with his eternal idol :-) :hi_hi_hi: He is called by audience : "Maybe the biggest Plu fan in Japan" ;;-)))

Japanese fans love :ts_ss: pose. He had to do the same pose many many many many many times.



According to a fan who asked him about this "JAPAN" Polo shirt, he bought it himself. I don't know what did he mean, but fans thanked him for the concern he showed :plush40:

I can't agree with Letsy this time :-) Storm on Monday was really amazing. :ya_hoo_oo: This is an ice show in July. Not competition. Still, if I had to say who is the judge of PIW, I'd say it was audience themselves. So, "the winner" is surely Zhenya :mi_ga_et:
I saw Takahashi's 4Lz too. Though he couldn't land it at all, I enjoyed his challenge :co_ol:

Some information from people who went to the presentation :plush39:

- Zhenya had done strong sexy powerful programs so far, such as Tango or Godfather. This time he was suggested and thought he needs to try new & lovely image - Romeo & Juliet. :plush33:
- He made friend with Kenji Miyamoto. He likes Kenji :plush40: not only as his choreographer, but also as a person.
- After Japan he will go to Estonia. Pasquale Camerlengo will come there to continue their work.
- And then he will go to Italy to have five shows, and will show new short & long programs. :ya_hoo_oo:
- After Italy, Kenji will come to St.Petersburg to polish programs.
- He'd like to skate at Nationals, Euros, Worlds, and even at World Team Trophy. :du_el:
- He doesn't prepare for Sochi Olympics this season. It will start from next season. :plush37:
