Some pictures define an event, others capture a moment revealing an aspect of the human condition. In the series below, Reuters photographers offer unique insight into some of our best pictures of the year.
48 of 55 | DAVID GRAY (February 18: Vancouver, Canada):“Russia’s figure skating champion Evgeni Plushenko, the favourite to take the gold medal, was beaten by Evan Lysacek of the U.S., after Plushenko skated far below his best on the second night of competition. However, this was still a massive surprise for the Russian and all watching. As I have photographed Plushenko at the last three Winter Olympics, I knew he was a fiery character and would probably react somehow when he came out to receive his silver medal. So, I made sure I watched him from the moment he appeared from behind the curtains for the medal ceremony, until the moment he left the ice. As a result, he did something that was an obvious 'slur' to the judges, when he jumped from one side of the medal dais to the other, over the gold medal position he felt he deserved to be standing on. It was a picture that summed up his feelings and matched the biggest story of the men's figure skating perfectly. I made sure I got myself into a position where the Olympic rings would be behind the gold medalist once he was standing on the dais as this is important for placement at an Olympics.”
