:mi_ga_et:

Johnny never really "whined" about this issue. When I saw him in a TV show - he said that he did not expect to be hired by Stars on Ice because he was always skating with Champions on Ice until it closed down. And he also said that this whole "problem" is made up by other people and not him.

Russia's figure skating power play

Embattled skating federation former president retains authority in new position

After leading his country to its worst Olympic results in 50 years, outgoing Russian Figure Skating Federation president Valentin Piseev has found a way to retain power in the face of heavy political pressure.

In the days following the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games, during which Russia failed to win a gold medal in figure skating, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev ousted Piseev from a couple of important committees – including the organizing group for the 2014 Sochi Olympics – and called for his resignation.

Medvedev seemed to be saying that there was a need for new blood to get Russian athletes to the Sochi Games, although, for figure skating, it may be too late. It takes at least 10 years to develop an elite figure skater.

Evgeny Plushenko, who won a silver medal in Vancouver, has hinted that he will try to compete at Sochi but by then he’ll be 31 years old.

After the 2010 Olympics, Plushenko told Medvedev that with Piseev at the helm, figure skaters are “treated like floor rags.” He said a large amount of money slated for the sport doesn’t trickle down to coaches or skaters.

Plushenko claimed that he sold his car – a gift from the former Russian president Vladimir Putin – to pay for costumes and coaches in his comeback attempt in Vancouver.

Despite Medvedev’s move against him, Piseev evidently found a way to remain in power anyway. Although he maintained he wouldn’t seek re-election as federation president, the federation constitution was changed recently to create a new position – general director. The director has full authority to make decisions and distribute money, leaving the president as an apparent figurehead.

One candidate for the president’s job, 2002 Olympic pair champion Anton Sikharulidze, withdrew his name from consideration after finding out about the constitutional change at the last minute. “While my goal was to develop the federation, the new rules do not grant such powers to the president,” he told Russian reporters. “I am a young, energetic, and fairly busy man. I don’t have time to carry around the briefcase for the general director.”

Piseev persuaded Alexander Gorshkov to run for president. Gorshkov won the post, getting all 66 votes. Piseev then became the general director with 65 votes.

At the International Skating Union Congress elections this weekend, Gorshkov will be unable to run for any elected positions as the constitution forbids federation presidents from filling such posts.

Instead, Piseev’s wife Alla Shekhovtsova is expected to enter the race to become a member of the ice dance technical committee, or even its chairman.

In recent months, a growing number of Russian coaches and former skaters have publicly criticized both Piseev and Shekhovtsova.

Plushenko backed Sikharulidze for president. Elena Chaikovskaya, the matriarch of ice dancing in Russia, told The Globe and Mail that Piseev has hampered the work of coaches he does not like, got rid of opponents, and surrounded himself with people who agree with him.

Piseev, 68, has a talent for staying in power. He was dismissed from his Russian federation post several times over the years, but bounced back every time.

In Moscow, Chaikovskaya seems totally unaware of Piseev’s coup, and is celebrating the win of Gorshkov. “I am outside the confidence,” she admitted earlier this week.

But outside the country, the expatriate coaches figured it out very quickly.

“[Piseev] will be able to do what he wants again,” said one coach who wished to remain anonymous.

Plushenko has another season in him

Russian puts Grand Prix stop in his homeland on his calendar

Olympic silver medalist Evgeni Plushenko plans to compete in the next Grand Prix season, according to the list of competitors released over the weekend by the International Skating Union.

The 27-year-old Russian is scheduled to skate at the Cup of Russia event in Moscow Nov. 19 through 21. He did not compete at the world championships in Italy last March and does not have a high world ranking...

Grand Prix Assignments Announced

The ISU has released the 2010 Grand Prix Assignments. This is kind of a rough draft as some of the spots are TBD and there will likely be several substitutions before the event.

With the releasing of the assignments, it appears the rumors that France would not have a Grand Prix event haven't played out as Grand Prix Paris is slated to be the final Grand Prix stop this upcoming season.

Amongst the men's entrants I'm kind of surprised to see Kevin Van der Perren, Evgeny Plushenko, and Johnny Weir. Johnny, at this point, scheduled for both Skate Canada and Grand Prix Paris. Plushenko is currently only scheduled for Rostelecom Cup. Van der Perren, who by all accounts was retiring, is scheduled to compete at NHK Trophy and Skate America....

Zhenya will miss "Cup of Russia". He says if he keeps in good health, he may take part in Russian Nationals this season.

Evgeni said that age 31 may not be good to compete. But he also thinks there's not a skater who participated in Olys 4 times so far. So he wants to take part in Sochi and to do something new in figure skating. And, if he stands on the podium there, it will be awesome.

China's golden couple plan wedding on ice

CHINA'S first Olympic champion figure skaters Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo are to combine their long-delayed wedding party with a star-studded gala on ice next month.

The couple came out of retirement to claim the pairs title at the Vancouver Winter Games in February, ending Russia's 46-year dominance of the event. Zhao had proposed to Shen on the ice after their 2007 world championship triumph and, although they are officially married in the eyes of the state having purchased a marriage licence, tradition demands they hold a party to celebrate the union.

"We would like to combine our wedding with a superb figure skating gala, to express our gratitude to all friends and supporters," Zhao, who took the blame for the three-year delay in the ceremony, told the Xinhua news agency.

The couple said the gala, "Artistry on Ice", would also feature Russia's Olympic singles champions Evgeni Plushenko and Alexei Yagudin, Swiss former world champion Stephane Lambiel, American Johnny Weir and Japan's Mao Asada.

Pluschenko and Yagudin to perform at Chinese wedding

Image

Olympic figure skating stars Evgeny Pluschenko and Aleksey Yagudin will perform at an ice show dedicated to the wedding of Vancouver Olympic champion pair Zhao Hongbo and Shen Xue of China

The Chinese athletes officially got married in 2007, but the celebrations were postponed so as not to distract them from competing on the highest level. After the 2010 Games, the couple announced their retirement from the sport, finally finding time for their personal life.

“We plan to combine our wedding with a gala concert on the ice. Thus, we want to express our gratitude to our friends and fans,” Sport-Express newspaper quoted Zhao Hongbo as saying.

In addition to the Russian stars, Swiss Stephane Lambiel, Johnny Weir of the US and Japanese Mao Asada also received an invitation to take part in the show.

Evgeny Pluschenko is currently prohibited from competitive figure skating for a year, while his archrival Aleksey Yagudin retired in 2003, but has kept his form by taking part in TV and ice shows.

Putting icing on a wedding ceremony

China is in for an ice-skating treat on Sept 4 when some of the world's greatest performers will hit the rink at the Beijing Capital Gymnasium.

Skating stars such as Evgeni Plushenko, Alexei Yagudin, Stephane Lambiel, Johnny Weir, Asada Mao, Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo, Pang Qing and Tong Jian and Zhang Dan and Zhang Hao will perform at the event.

These Olympic and world champions have come together to launch Artistry On Ice, an event similar to the United States' Stars On Ice, and also to celebrate the wedding of Vancouver pairs gold medalists Shen and Zhao.

The event, organized by the Chinese Skating Association, Shanghai Dragon TV and sponsored by Artistry, the cosmetics brand of Amway, aims to promote figure skating in China.

The Stars On Ice tour has been extremely popular in the US, Japan and South Korea. Shen and Zhao, who came out of retirement to win the gold medal at the Winter Olympics this year, after claiming bronze at the 2002 and 2006 Games, have often taken part in that tour and that spurred them to create a Chinese equivalent.

Shen and Zhao married in 2007, after dating for 18 years, but Zhao said after winning the Olympic gold that he owed his wife a proper wedding ceremony.

Skating alongside Shen and Zhao will be their former teammates and Vancouver Olympics pairs silver medalists Pang and Tong and 2006 Turin Olympic silver medalists Zhang and Zhang.

Foreign participants, include Japan's Mao, the ladies singles winner at this year's Four Continents Championships and World Figure Skating Championships, and Vancouver runner-up Plushenko of Russia, who was also the 2006 Winter Olympics men's singles champion and 2010 European Championships winner.

Other member of the star-studded cast include Yagudin of Russia, the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics men's gold medalist and four-time World Championships winner; Lambiel of Switzerland, the 2006 Winter Games men's silver medalist, World Championships winner and Vancouver fourth-place finisher; and Weir of the US, the 2008 World Championships bronze medalist and Vancouver Games' sixth-place finisher.
