Figure skating: more corruptthan ever?

In the Olympics, many events depend on subjective scoring from a panel of judges. But confidence in these scoring systems has been undermined by scandals, perhaps most infamously a 2002 pairs skating case in which a French judge “was reportedly pressured by some combination of her national federation and the Russian mafia :kli_ny: to vote for a Russian pair in exchange for a Russian vote for a French couple in ice dancing.” In response, the International Skating Union, the ISU, anonymized judges’ scores—on the theory that vote trading would then be harder to carry off—and developed an elaborate score-tabulation system.
A new study from a professor of economics at Dartmouth, however, suggests this has all been for naught or, even worse, for show. He finds that, if anything, a competitor with a compatriot on the judging panel can now expect even more nationalistic bias and vote trading. And he thinks the ISU may be part of the problem: “Some of the actions of the ISU after the 2002 judging scandal can only be rationalized as attempts to reduce the perception of corruption by limiting outside monitoring.”

Opining on the ISU Judging System: A difficulty discrepancy (3)

My analysis so far of the ISU Judging System has been fairly technical and number-crunching. And though you can’t talk IJS without going into numbers, this third part of the analysis is much more conceptual, relatively at least. It will also focus on the ladies’ side, whereas the other discussions so far have been skewed toward the men. The pink elephant in the IJS room that no one seems to have addressed is the differences between the men and the ladies.

Difference between men and ladies
If you are a skating observer, you have no doubt been witness to an interesting trend in the past few years – while the difficulty on the men’s side has been increasing since Vancouver, the difficulty on the ladies’ side has been stagnant at best. Many would argue that the senior ladies of 2012 are doing technically easier programs, on the whole, than those of the past, anywhere from a few years to even ten years ago.

And while many have marveled at the quad fest that has become permanent amongst the men and many have lamented the loss of difficulty with the ladies, no on has gotten into the reasons for it. I would argue that it’s less about the athletes’ abilities and more about the incentivizing of the IJS.

Jump values not differentiated
Like it or not, men, in general, take to jumps differently than ladies do. And the age range of jumping prowess is different, with the guys typically peaking in their mid- to late-20s while the ladies typically peak in their mid-teens to early-20s.

The men are also capable of more difficult jumps than the ladies are – but it goes beyond the difference between quads and triples. The discrepancy happens within the triples. Senior men handle all the triples except for the axel pretty standardly, with the difference between the lutz and the axel being the first big leap in difficulty*. With the ladies, however, that big difference happens between the loop and the flip.

*Skating 101: Relative difficulty in jumps is toe/salchow, loop, flip, lutz, axel.

With that being the case, you would expect the relative point values between the jumps to differ between the men and the ladies. But they don’t. This uniformity has led to a number of unforeseen results that currently pervade skating.

The lutz: An endangered species?
One of those unexpected consequences of uniformity between the men and the ladies is the triple lutz having become an endangered species. Pre-IJS, the triple lutz was always considered the equivalent of the triple axel for the men. It’s a separator, and everyone needed one in the short and two in the free to be competitive for the top. And it’s the must-have because it’s the most difficult jump that the ladies attempt (with outliers, of course, being the occasional triple axel or even rarer quad attempt).

At the recent World Championships, the top 24 ladies planned seven triple lutzes in the short program and 24 in the free skate (31 total). Compare that to the 2010 Olympics (recall my pre-Vancouver/post-Vancouver discussion), where the top 24 planned 15 in the short and 26 in the free (41 total). Go back another four years – at the 2006 Olympics, the top 24 planned 19 lutzes in the short and 37 in the free (56 total).

That’s to say that the number of triple lutzes, once considered the must-have jump, planned at the most recent World Championships decreased by 45% since Torino! And the biggest reason is the fact that the differentiation of base values don’t incentivize skaters enough, particularly when wrong-edge deductions, much more common amongst the ladies than they are amongst the men, are taken into account.

What about the flip? It’s less of an issue because true flips are more easily executed for the ladies, in general, than true lutzes are. It once again goes back to IJS incentive/disincentive. A wrong-edge call on the lutz will generally make that jump (valued at 6.00 points) worth as much as an average flip (valued at 5.30). So doing a good triple flip is automatically going to be better than doing a good triple lutz off the wrong edge. And because of this, the ladies are choosing to perform fewer lutzes.

Whereas the triple lutz is valued 2.50 below the triple axel, the triple loop is only valued 0.20 below the triple flip (and the triple flip is 0.70 below the triple lutz). While this difference may be applicable to the men, it doesn’t seem sufficient for the ladies. It gets even more obvious when you look at the ladies’ short program.

Short program conservatism
The attrition of the triple lutz in the short program is no secret. In recent years, triple toe-triple toe combinations have become more standard amongst ladies’ short programs. But pre-IJS, the top skaters in the world would have never thought it would be an advantage to do a triple toe-triple toe and a solo triple lutz in the short over doing a triple lutz-double toe and a solo triple flip. But in the current version of the IJS, the former is now worth 1.60 more than the latter.

Not only has the toe-toe become a mainstay, but the solo triple loop has also become very popular. And the relative values of the jumps have everything to do with these changes. And many skaters and coaches would contend that short programs in the current era of skating are actually less difficult than they were 10-15 years ago, though the IJS would disagree with that solely based on the base values assigned.

Why try a solo triple lutz that you know you’ll get a wrong-edge call for it when you can do a solo triple loop that will almost always score higher?

But you don’t see this discrepancy amongst the men (though some of the guys have taken to doing a solo triple loop over the flip or the lutz), simply because quads and triple axels are so much more important with them.

Once again, a different scale of values for the ladies would ameliorate this problem. That, along with the greater incentivizing for combinations based on difficulty as I wrote in the last segment of this analysis, would bring things closer to reality for the ladies.

Free skate imbalance
The problems extend past the short program. The system does not inherently reward variety in the free skate. Whereas in the 6.0 system, the ladies found it absolutely necessary to attempt all triples up to the lutz in order to be competitive for the top, the IJS does not deem that to be at all necessary.

Just look at the past five World Champions, all of whom have omitted one of the five essential triples. In 2008, Mao Asada won without a salchow (which was considered minor because she had a triple axel, though she did not complete on there). In 2009, Yuna Kim omitted the loop (she also did that when she won the Olympics in 2010). In 2010, Asada omitted both the sal and the lutz while favoring two triple axels in the free skate (one was underrotated). In 2011, Miki Ando took out the flip. And, of course, most contentiously, this year, Carolina Kostner did not have a lutz, becoming the first female skater since Jill Trenary in 1990 to win Worlds without a jump more difficult than the triple flip.

The solution for the free skate imbalance could be a bonus based on the number of different triples attempted. An extra four or five points for having successfully rotated the toe, sal, loop, flip, and lutz could really be a game changer. And it would change the way in which skaters approach their programs.

In addition to that, triple-triple combinations have also been scuttled in favor of the easier but still seven-triple friendly double axel-triple toe combination. This, of course, can be solved by properly valuing combinations based on difficulty.

Unfair to create this distinction?
In the age of anything you can do I can do (better), my proposal of a different point value scale for the men than for the ladies might seem sexist to some. But if that’s all you see, then you’re looking through the lens of ideology.

Figure skating is actually an anomaly when it comes to differentiation between male and female. In gymnastics, skills are valued differently between men and women (a double tuck on floor, for example, is a C for men and a D for women). In professional basketball, the men’s three-point line is a foot further from the basket than the women’s three-point line. In tennis, the men play best-of-five in Grand Slams while the women play best-of-three (though the merits of that are debatable). In professional boxing, the men go a maximum of 12 rounds while the women go a maximum of ten rounds. And plenty more examples exist.

So why is there no differentiation in scoring between the men and the ladies in figure skating? The differences in how the jumps work are apparent, and for the IJS to be fairer and more in tune with the realities of skating, this discrepancy needs to be addressed.

http://nvspb.ru/stories/interes-k-figur ... u-to-48457

Kenji Miyamoto Interviews

Osaka Nichi Nichi Shimbun (Osaka Daily News)
Text by Junko Kuroo

12.6.2012

- Kenji Miyamoto is 33 now.
- Last season he choreographed over fifty programs mainly for Japanese skaters.
- In general he makes a program for three days.
- Even after choreographing Daisuke Takahashi's short program "Eye" for the season 2009-10, the number of requests from skaters didn't increase much. But media was getting to pay more attention to him.
- He started skating at 10 years old. He was playing also football and baseball. But he was good at skating. Switching to Ice Dance in 1995 was because of his coach Yutaka Higuchi's suggestion. He was tall among Japanese skaters. So the coach thought Miyamoto should do ice dancing.
- He won the 1995 Japanese Junior Nationals as an ice dancer.
- Retirement was in 2006.
- He lived in USA and France when he was a high school student. There were many choreographers around him. So he was dreaming necessarily someday he will become a choreographer too.

Image
http://www.nnn.co.jp/dainichi/rensai/sk ... 12027.html

13.6.2012

- Miyamoto choreographs different way for different types of skaters. He watches before choreographing each skater's appearance, arms or legs length, muscle. With those factors, he decides what fits to each one. Pretty curvy program, or rock-solid program, or..
- He skates together with a client and choreographs. He makes program with skater.

Image
http://www.nnn.co.jp/dainichi/rensai/sk ... 13037.html

14.6.2012

- "I respect my client's decision on the music selection. If my client said 'I'd love to skate to this song' I respect it. If his coach said 'I'd love my skater to do like that' I respect it. Only when it's not suitable for my client, I suggest something another."
- He starts choreographing not on the floor but the ice. Because he never prepare anything before choreography. First, he goes on the ice with skater, and makes part from part, at the end the whole program is done.
- To come up with an idea is the most difficult to him.

He didn't compete for three years, but as soon as I saw him, I knew that there was a true Olympic Champion on the ice. - Takahiko Kozuka, Rostelecom Cup 2009
