Delson, Québec’s Amélie Lacoste, 22, placed third at the BMO Canadian Figure Skating Championships. She will step into Canada’s second spot in the ladies competition because her training mate, Myriane Samson, 22, from St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Québec, has a knee injury that has forced her to withdraw. Canadian champion Cynthia Phaneuf, 23, Contrecoeur, Québec, is the other ladies entry for Canada.
In the men’s category,
2011 Canadian silver medalist Shawn Sawyer, 26, Edmundston, N.B., has decided to tour with Stars on Ice this spring. World team member from 2010, Kevin Reynolds, 20, Coquitlam, B.C. will now join two-time silver world medalist and four-time Canadian Champion Patrick Chan, 20, Toronto, Ont., and Joey Russell, 22, Labrador City, N.L., in the men’s competition.
Skate Canada’s Director High Performance, Mike Slipchuk, acknowledged it was a tough decision for both skaters to make. "Myriane has been struggling with this injury since she competed at the ISU Four Continents in February, and while she hoped to be ready to compete, it just wasn’t going to be possible. Amélie has been training well, and we know she is ready to step into the world championships with confidence."
"Shawn’s decision was a difficult one for him," continued Slipchuk. "His plans were obviously affected by the delay in the timing of the worlds’ competition this year.
We totally respect his decision to skate on the tour, and wish him well. This gives Kevin an opportunity to improve on his 11th place finish from last year’s world championships and we welcome him to the team."
